International Workshop on Strengthening Research, Education & Advocacy in Conflict, Peace & Development Studies in Nepal, Sri Lanka & Pakistan

The Department of Development Studies, CIIT Abbottabad organized four days international workshop on “Strengthening Research, Education and Advocacy in Conflict, Peace and Development Studies in Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. High level delegations from partners’ institutions and countries i.e. Tribhuvan University (TU), Nepal; Ruhuna University (RU), Sri Lanka and Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), Norway attended the workshop. In addition to the relevant public sector national institutions, delegations from Norwegian Church Aid, Islamabad and University of Mainz Germany also participated in the workshop.

In the opening session of the workshop, Prof. Dr Khan Gul Jadoon, Director CIIT Abbottabad welcomed the guests and shared the vision and international collaboration of CIIT with the participants. Prof. Dr Gamini Senanayake, Vice Chancellor of Ruhuna University thanked CIIT Abbottabad for organizing the workshop and NORHED, Norway for funding this joint academic and research program. Prof. Dr Chandra Mani Poudel, Registrar Tribhuvan University, Nepal shared the key success of the Conflict, Peace and Development Studies program in Nepal. Norwegian Church Aid and the German delegation presented their perspectives on peace and development in Pakistan.

In the plenary sessions, the first day of the workshop was dedicated to curricula development. The MS curricula of Conflict, Peace and Development Studies already followed by (TU) Nepal and (RU) Sri Lanka and the newly developed and approved MS and PhD programs of CIIT Abbottabad were discussed in detail and necessary amendment were suggested in them.  During the second day, the MS and PhD admission and students and faculty exchange were discussed and finalized. On the third day the overall activities of the five-year project were deliberated upon and action plan for implementation of the project was streamlined. On the fourth and final day of the workshop, all collaborative partners and international participants of the workshop were invited by the CIIT main campus and the worthy Rector and Pro-Rector hosted a dinner in their honor. At the end, an agreement among the four partners’ universities (TU, RU, NMBU and CIIT) was signed. It is worth mentioning the CIIT Abbottabad as part of this project has already announced fully funded scholarships for MS in Conflict, Peace and Development Studies and PhD in Development Studies from Fall 2014.
