Environmental science is an interdisciplinary field that explores the relationships between natural and human systems and the impact of human activities on the environment. This field draws on knowledge and methods from a range of disciplines, including ecology, biology, chemistry, physics, geology, and social sciences. Environmental science seeks to understand the complex interactions between living and non-living elements of the environment and how these interactions are affected by human activities such as pollution, deforestation, climate change, and resource depletion. It aims to provide solutions for the sustainable use of natural resources and the protection of the environment. Environmental chemistry, environmental biology, ecology, atmospheric science, geology, and environmental policy and management are among the major areas in environmental sciences. In addition, energy and resource management, environmental health, and sustainable development are also important fields in environmental sciences. In recent decades, due to growing concerns about climate change, pollution, and the degradation of natural resources, environmental science has become an increasingly important area of research. Environmental scientists use scientific principles and methods to investigate and develop strategies for mitigating the negative impacts of human activities on the environment. Therefore, this field is crucial for understanding the impact of human activities on the environment and to developing effective strategies for conserving, managing, and protecting natural resources and their sustainability for present and future generations.
Department of Environmental Sciences was established in 2004, at CUI Abbottabad. Being one of the pioneer departments of environmental sciences in Pakistan, we provide comprehensive knowledge and skills of fundamentals of natural, biological, and physical sciences in solving environmental problems through holistic approaches. The main emphasis of the department is to conduct globally recognized basic and applied research and deliver an education of international standards to build a skilled human resource that will contribute to national and international decision-making and appropriate management of the environment. Our faculty members are highly qualified teachers, top scientists, and mentors. We contribute to quality education and scientific expertise in the field of environmental sciences.
