Ph.D. Geology Program Description

A Ph.D. in Geology is an advanced academic degree that focuses on the study of Earth’s materials, structures, processes, composition, and history. PhD geology is offered by the Department of Earth Sciences following Higher Education Commission (HEC) guidelines. The duration of PhD program is between 3 years to 5 years. After 5 years the student must apply for an extension every semester. Ph.D. in Geology from the Department of Earth Sciences provides you with the knowledge, skills, and expertise to conduct advanced research in the fields of Paleontology, Mineralogy, Sedimentology, Structure Geology, Geochemistry, Petroleum Geology, Economic Geology, Hydrogeology, and Engineering Geology. However, the maximum time for the award of PhD degree shall be 8 years for students admitted in Spring 2019 and onward. The highly qualified faculty of 11 PhDs and state-of-the-art laboratories are the major strengths of the department. Students can opt for research in any of the major areas of Geology including Petrology, Sedimentology, Structure Geology, Geomorphology, Stratigraphy, Geochemistry, Paleontology, Tectonic, and Geochronology. The set of knowledge and skills provided by our department will make the student, the best choice for Oil and Gas national and international companies, the Atomic Energy Commission, the Minerals and Mines sector, Tunnels and Road construction firms, Government Agencies, the Geological Survey of Pakistan, Mining Department of Pakistan, Gem Industry and Different NGO’s.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The eligibility to enroll in Ph.D. Geology, the student must have MS/MPhil in Geology or a closely relevant field.
  • The thesis of 06 credit hours in the relevant field from an accredited educational institution with a minimum CGPA 3.0/4.0 (semester system), 70 % marks (annual system) and no 3rd Division (annual system) or D-grade (semester system) throughout the academic career.
  • GRE (subject) as per HEC policy or NTS/GAT (subject) with a minimum score of 60% is required.
  • Application and admission

At CUI admissions in graduate programs are offered on merit. The merit is determined on the basis if the academic record, GRE/NTS-GAT (Subject) score and interview.

Program Duration and Course Work Requirements:

  • The duration of PhD program is between 3 years to 7 years. After 5 years the student must apply for an extension every semester
  • Coursework (18 credit hours).
  • Comprehensive examination.
  • Thesis (09 credit hours, allowed only after completion of course work).
  • At least one research article (W-category) based on the PhD research work, as per HEC policy.
  • Public defense.
