World Environment Day
Every year, World Environment Day is observed on June 5, 2021. The day is celebrated to encourage awareness and environmental protection. This year department of Environmental Sciences COMSATS University Islamabad, Abbottabad Campus celebrated the environment day in collaboration with the Environment Protection Agency (EPA). The theme for World Environment Day 2021 was “Ecosystem Restoration”. The main focus was to highlight the importance of ecosystem restoration in Pakistan and how healthy ecosystems can enhance people’s livelihoods, counteract climate change and stop the collapse of biodiversity.
In this regard, the Mr Muhammad Ali, Director (EPA) highlighted the importance of ecosystem and its restoration, a mission to prevent, reverse the degradation of ecosystems and the diversity of life they sustain. He also shared the contribution of EPA to restore the ecosystem and environment by enforcing rules and regulation. The assistant director of EPA also addressed the environmental challenges in the country with reference to ecosystem restoration and how EPA contributes in policy making for protection of environment and biodiversity.
Dr. Qaisar Mahmood (TI), head of the environmental sciences department of the COMSATS University, Abbottabad campus, also enlightened the importance of ecosystem and its restoration, which aims to support developing countries’ capacity for planning and implementing ecosystem restoration as part of their national biodiversity strategies and action plans. He also emphasized the government; NGOs and citizens to put their efforts in spreading awareness and the importance of conserving the environment and negate the impact of human activity on the environment. The ceremony ended with the Certificates distribution among the EPA members and event organizing team of Environmental Sciences CUI Abbottabad Campus.
